I adore everything in it: weather (e.g. it's spring now there), people, nature (yes-yes I adore it)... But I can judge about it only by movies, films as I've never been there yet (but I hope that one day my dream will come true). Being a teenager I was astonished by a book "The Thorn Birds" (Collen McCullough), the nature of the country was discribed so vividly that a reader can easily imagine a citezen or a tourist. Great!
So, the other day I read in the Internet that a new movie goes into production where Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star there ("Australia"). Tourism promoters claim the real star of the movie is the country itself. The movie opens internationally on Nov. 26.
What is it about? The film follows the story of a noblewoman on a cattle drive in Australia during World War II. The movie was filmed largely in rugged Western Australia, notably in and around the small town of Kununurra, a three-hour flight north of Perth, and in the California-sized Kimberley wilderness region.
As the director of the film said, that tourism numbers will rise after the movie would be released.

It's No Need To Worry (Even the World Finincial Crisis)

Psychologists consider that worrying is a good and useful tool as it helps keep us safe and reminds us to get things done. But when it is out of control, it turns into an energy-sapping, sleep-stealing anxiety cycle. Worrying has become a modern-day epidemic, infecting our lives with different strains – from sweating the small stuff (did I lock the car?) to imagining the worst (is this headache a brain tumour?). My father can't live a day without worrying while my mum perceives life and everythin in it patiently and calm as it should be. Maybe it's so as she is a doctor?! Our worries can, over time, suppress the immune system, raise blood pressure and lead to anxiety-related conditions. I am usually anxious before taking examinations but I always pull myself together and pass them successfully.
There are several rules how to cure yourself from worries:

Challenge your negative beliefs.

Learn to accept uncertainty. Just be yourself :)

Name your fear.

We should just live and enjoy the life as it's so interesting to live! ;D

To Be Under the Weather at Cold Weather

I'd like to continue stories about the origins of idioms that we use in our everyday life.
For example, my dad, when he feels ill, always uses the phrase "I'm under the weather... Uff"

But the origins of the term is not related to cold weather at all. In fact, "under the weather" is a saying with a nautical background. Sailors and passengers on ships would get ill or seasick during their journey. Sick passengers were ordered to go below deck, which was believed to be the most stable part of the ship as well as a shelter from the weather. This was to ensure a speedy recovery from whatever was ailing them.

So, it’s no matter what profession you have, you use this phrase as a synonym for being ill. As plastics already become our friends and life without them seems to be very difficult. My grandmother who lives in the country, living all her life without credits, faced a problem as now she needs to establish a credit card. Moreover, now this financial crisis makes people to think about their savings.
So, I advise her to apply no annual fee cards. As these plastics can be:

a great way of saving money,

very convenient to make payments,

helpful to economize.

Maybe there is only one disadvantage of such kinds of credit cards as the cardholder should have excellent or good credit rating. But it isn't also a great problem as it's possible to compare plastics for people with no credit score.

God Bless You! Interesting Facts

Winter time is comming :((( and we are more likely to catch a flu, cold or some more viral respiratory infections. Though now it's still autumn most of my colleagues and friends are ill. Moreover, I, myself, have just recovered from a flu (that's why I didn't write anything for a long time). "God bless you!" is an usual phrase that was said in response to my sneezing for these days.

I decided to make a little research about the story behind "God Bless You". And I found out some interesting facts. Actually, there are several different theories behind why this commonly used phrase is said in reaction to a sneeze.

One tale dates back to the time when an outbreak of Bubonic Plague hit Rome during medieval times and in 590 [A.D.], Pope Gregory I ordered the citizens of Rome to pray to fend off an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague and since people of the day thought a sneeze was a symptom of the plague, they would say 'God Bless You' to the sneezer.

Another story tells us that there is a superstition that when one sneezes, his heart stops. Saying "God Bless You" is believed to make the sneezer return to life or make his heart continue to beat. Funny:D

There are also some possitive and negative views to the sneezing.

The positive explanation states that sneezing helps cleanse the body of evil spirits.

The negative states that sneezing is a bad sign. "People used to believe that your soul was thrown from your body during a sneeze."

So, "God bless you!" if you sneezed. Take care!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://financial-surfer.blogspot.com/2008/10/god-bless-you-interesting-facts.html' title='God Bless You! To tell you the truth, I'm not so interested in the comming ellection, and this film can give rise to mockery and can help to learn more about the life of our presedent. They say it is a a three-act film starting with Bush as a young man "with a missed life", followed by his transformation and "an assertion of will which was amazingly powerful" [ Oliver Stone] as he came out from his father's shadow, and finally his invasion of Iraq.
I hope it's not boring.
Ok, I'm looking forward to watching it one day.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://financial-surfer.blogspot.com/2008/10/w-is-it-film.html' title='"W.". I understood this after visiting the courses of yoga last week (and I'm going to continue practising it even twice a week). And I think it will definitely help me with my nervous work. I hope so.
A friend of mine who is waiting for a baby, offered me to join her at this activity and I agreed. It's nice to find that the majority of people (old and young, pregnant and not, slim and with full weight) are interested in yoga. Moreover, there's also a baby yoga for newly-born children. Nice!!
All this inspired me to look at the world and my health with new feelings.

Mamma Mia! I visited this movie these weekends! WoW! It's amazing! Cool!! Incredible!
To say that I liked the musical, it's to say nothing! I fell in love with the music, ABBA songs as well as the playing of the actors. And now I admit that I'm an ABBA fan. The musical's plot is also rather unique and funny. And Pierce Brosnan, he showed himself as a real star who really made the movie funny. Moreover, the songs and the actors' voices make the simple story a fun watch through. The body movements and expressions makes the songs look as if they were real exchanges between the actors.
So, Mamma Mia really captures me and left unforgettable impressions.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://financial-surfer.blogspot.com/2008/09/mamma-mia-abbas-songs-forever.html' title='Mamma Mia! Moreover, it's autumn now, the time of depression. So, I have a great desire to change my image or something in my appearance. I want to do something with my hair. Actually, I don't have enough time to straighten my hair every morning before going to work. So, I want to try a professional chemical treatment.
I visited my stylist who is rather professional in it. The process can be of three types: relaxation, thermal reconditioning and brazilian hair treatment. It was interested to know that the ralaxation is a very good treatment for naturally curly-haired people and it takes only an hour while the result of it can last from three to six months. Isn't it great? But the only minus of it, perhaps, is that some relaxers can pose potential concerns like skin irritation and hair damage, including breakage and dryness.
The second opportunity to straighten hair is thermal reconditioning, also known as Japanese straightening, involves a combination of chemicals and heated irons. The process affects hair cuticles, making hair straight and shiny. Though chemicals remain on the hair for about 20 to 25 minutes, thermal reconditioning takes four hours from start to finish. That’s because the stylist irons your hair in tiny sections (a quarter of an inch at a time). After the process, hair can stay straight for six to 10 months. WoW! But thermal reconditioning poses several safety risks. Specifically, some women who've had this treatment suffered hair damage or even hair loss.
And the third method is is a newer straightening technique that’s become very popular, because it works well with many hair types. It's the so-called "Brazilian Hair Treatment " under the brand of Brazilian Keratin Treatment, Brazilian Blowout and Brazilian Hair. This treatment takes one and a half to four hours.
Weighing all the pros and cons of the methods I desided to try the first one: Relaxars (as I'm still afraid of doing experiments with my hair).

How Can I Protect My Credit Cards...?

The other day I faced the problem as I needed credit card protection. In fact, doing shopping I couldn't find one of my credit cards while paying for my new dress. I was searching it everywhere, in every coner of my bag, purse and even my pockets... but in vain... I coudn't find it anywhere. It was a real pity for me. The only thing I decided to do at that time was to freeze my credit card to be on the safe side. But to my great surprise when I came back home I discovered that my credit was in another bag. Uffff... very strange case...
This incident made me think about my card protection itself. Being a shopping addict and credit card spending lover I addressed to CREDIT LAND to learn more about it. They advised me to use their programs. There are some services that allow access to a three-in-one credit report but unfortunately it's only for a charge (and it's pointless).
So, the best way out is to monitor transactions activity myself or check my bank monthly statements.

Perm Tragedy is a National Tragedy...

I didn't write anything so long as I was shocked and I'm still at this state since this Sunday...
Russia is rather far from the US but the sorrow of the tragedy is very close to my heart...
A small Russian city that is near the Ural mountains became famous all over the world at one moment: passenger jet traveling from Moscow to the Ural Mountains city of Perm crashed while preparing to land early Sunday, killing all 88 people aboard including Citizens of the U.S., France, Turkey, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Latvia, officials said. It was a real wonder, made by the pilots, as they could direct the burning plane away from buildings and it crashed into an unpopulated area of the city, just a few hundred yards from residential buildings on the railway, and some part of the Trans-Siberian railway was also shut down as a result of the rail damage.
I can't discribe my feelings now... And it's nice to know that kids like my nephew learn to appreciate this kind of music.
WALL-E is a great love story and also a fairy-tale that urges us to think more about how we treat the planet we live on!

My Vacation Plans

I have finally made up my mind where to go on vacation. Since I have two weeks off in September it's about time to make a plan. I will go to Virginina! Why Virginia? Well, a few friends that have been there said it's a beatiful state (to be honest I have never been to a state that is not beautiful:)). And it has lots of Civil War sights. I love history so I would like to see all those historical places.
I have checked out a few sites on "what to see in Virginia" but none of them gave me enough information. I thinks I'll decide on the spot! I've already booked tickets. I'll go to DC first for a few days to visit my friends and then probably take a bus or drive to Virginia. It's going to be fun!!!!

Student Credit Cards

I've checking out some credit card deals online and I have noticed that most student student credit cards require good credit history. The bigegst issue is "do I spend too much on clothes"?
I don't want to say that I spend hundreds of dollars each month on new out fits but I like to buy clothes. I would rather save on going out (i haven't been to the movies for ages) but buy something new to wear. My boyfriend has literally ten times less clothes than I do.
I buy clothes I like, not the clothes I "need". I mean, I cannot say that I have nothing to wear. Still whenever I see something new I buy it. Especially if you try it on and it looks good.
The problem is: should I spend less on clothes because I do not really need it or should I treat myself. Dunno...May be I'm just being picky or it is the financial crisis that's making me kind of negative but I haven't seen that many great deals...

Coming Back

Wow. I remember my mum reading me some interesting tale before I went to sleep.
And I was so surprised to find a blog with some really warm words on Irish fairy tales about love and friendship. There comes a day when your plastic friend stops functioning and you cannot any longer enjoy its convenience and benefits. But you do not need to worry about that.

Once your credit card gets out of order, you are certian to find a new and perhaps better credit card offer in your mailbox. But, be very careful now! A new credit card which is an adequate replacement of your previous one is always good news but there might be a trap.

It's important to remember that companies never do anything without self-profit, so they expect to gain at the new credit card offer. Consequently, you lose something.

So, if you like your new credit card, do accept it, but scrutinize the fine print. It is a hard task, really.

So, why not move your current debt onto another credit card with a much lower interest rate and pay it off comfortably without much limiting yourself? Today credit card companies are quite ready and willing to offer you balance transfer credit card deals and wise customers sieze every little opportunity.

Some credit users manage to save hundreds in interest with such credit cards!

But it all is not that easy as it seems at first sight. The point is that there are cardholders who get too much involved in this game with credit card balances and they end up with a new debt apart from the one on the old credit card.

So, if you mean to get yourself a balance transfer credit card, be ready to use it only for most needed purchases and to pay it off in time and in full so as not to accumulate new debt.

Online or Offline?

And another hot story on the issue of ID and credit card information security...If online credit card operations lack decent protection, then what can be said about using your Visa or MasterCard for offline purchases?

I guess, you've already heard about the numerous security breaches at retailers and restaurants. And the breaches were caused by the staff themselves! They used special devices for scanning your card's information and were paid $30 for each plastic. It's a great variant and I chose it as it's the most solid, best handling and most refined open-air version of the American legend. I'll explain why.

More and more Americans are becoming credit card holders today but by no means all of them take risk of using their card for buying online. Why does it happen when online shopping with credit cards is generally considered more convenient and faster? Well, it's the concern about security and fraud issues that discourages online buyers.

When Discover did a survey of its cardholders, almost half of them worried about the security and 45% said they would shop online more if the protection were stronger.

Thus, Discover Bank, together with American Express, launched a program to win more trust of their customers.

So, if you shop online with a Discover or Amex card you enjoy zero liability. Now you're not responsible if someone steals your credit card number and makes unauthorised purchases. Discover offers one-time use passwords which also ensure more protection. It means you enter a new number each time you buy online. There are also extra passwords available which are known only to you and your card company when you buy from certain online merchants.

All these options target at making online shopping more secure. Well if you don't quite like it that you can use your card only for offline purchases, Discover and American Express cards are sure to give you more market.

And the last thing. If you are going to apply, read the fine print carefully and pay special attention to the fees.

Another Step to Equality
There are many groups that are discriminated against. Isn't it considered to be private? Anyhow, on 25 April, the House of Representatives voted 420 to 3 to pass the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). Passing the Senate won't be a problem for the bill. President Bush also speaks in its favor.

"Clearly the House finally understood the incredible significance this has. The American public can now access genetic tests, feel safe about their genetic information not being misused and participate in research that involves genetic information," says Sharon Terry, president of the Genetic Alliance, a charity lobbying for the rights of people with inherited illnesses.

Well, I guess it's another step to equality...

Credit Card Deals with No Annual Fee

Is there a point in applying for credit card deals with no annual fee?

There are fee free credit cards for all types of credit. The best age is 25-35. I can understand why. People in this age group have already achieved something professionally and financially. They are mature and have experience in perosnla finance management. On the other hand, they are still young, have fewer medical problems.
The funniest part is that people over 62 get the same credit score as those inbetween 25 and 35. It is requierd by he Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) to protect the elderly from discrimination. Are banks really so eager to give credit to people over 62? Most balance transfer offers will come with an artificially low introductory interest rate, such as 1% or 0%, for a fixed period of time. After that time period the interest rate will rise to whatever was permitted by the terms of the offer.
However, it is a good way to make money. For example, if your credit card offers 0% balance transfer you can use the money borrowed from a bank to invest in something. It works especially well if your credit limit allows you to transfer significant amounts of money. Some people make more than a thousand dollars this way.

My Friend's Blog

I have received an e-mail from a high school friend of mine. There are several options:
- apply for an instant approval credit card. However, your application will still be reviewed and you can not be 100% that you will be approved for the offer.
- apply for a secured credit card. You will have to open a bank deposit. Your credit limit will not exceed the amount of money on the deposit account.
- ask a family member or a friend to be your co-signer. The co-signer will not use your credit card but will be held responsible if you are not able to pay off your debt.
All of them will help you rebuild your credit history. It really depends on what you are looking for. Are you interested in instant approval? low interest? 0% APR? cash back?
First of all, consider your FICO score. Apply only to those deals that are meant for the kind of credit history you have. Take a close look at those top deals offered by specialized websites. These site are created for your convenience by professionals so you can use their knowledge to make the right decision. Why do banks lend you money for free? Why are banks so willing to give money to just about anyone? Who is paying the additional expenses accrued to the product's price when the retailer accepts credit card payment?
I can never know 'the truth' but here's what I think:
Banks want to give you money because they hope that you will screw up and they will charge you extra fees. Take any low interest deal, for example, a Chase bank offer for excellent and good credit. The default APR is more than twice as high as the ongoing APR. The late payment fee is $15.
And what about additional expenses? All of them are simply included in the price. Like any other expenses. There is nothing to do about it.
Bottom line: banks want to make money one you but you can avoid it by managing your account wisely.

My Dog

You shouldn't think that I am just a financial freak. There are many other things I enjoy. And one of them is spending time with my dog.
My dog is a sweet girl with beautiful eyes. Her name is Diva and she is a German Shepard. She is four but she is still a baby. It's a very big dog and that's what I especially like about her. It's like having a huge toy because she lets me whatever I want - use her as a floor-pillow, take a bone out of her mouth, etc.
Today she got in trouble. I haven't called a veterinarian yet, she seems to be quite cheerful. We'll see.

Online Application - Part II.

I have come across another article on the issue of online credit card application and management. Here are the major services online banking offers:
- Electronic bill payment
- Investment
- Account balance and history
- Credit card and loan applications and transactions
- Account aggregation which enables you to watch all your accounts in one place
- Bank statements, sometimes integrated with personal finance programs, such as Quicken etc.
- Funds transfer between the customer's savings and checking accounts
The article also gives some inspiring statistics:
"Latest survey showed that the percentage of people using online banking for credit card applications and other transactions increased more than twice since 2001 and goes on growing. At the same time, banking industry is expected to spend $248,1 bln this year on IT including hardware and software, IT services and telecommunications. That means each bank will have its online banking service every customer should be able to use."
So, I guess, there is no way to avoid using online banking service and no real reason to fear it.

Online Credit Card Application: Pros and Contras

More and more people apply for credit cards online. But there is a great discussion whether it is reasonable or not. The biggest pro is the convenience that special credit card sites offer. The main contra is the security issue.
Lets examine the process of applying for a credit card online. To be more objective we'll compare the two sites www.credit-card-online-offer.com and www.apply-online-credit-card.info.
Both sites provide you with basic information about credit cards. It's not very detailed but at least you can figure out the kind of credit history you have (if you know your score, of course, but if you don't there is the 'apply for a free credit report' option.
Then you need to consider the left navigation area. If you are looking for a specific type of reward credit cards choose the corresponding option. But in order to make the right decision you need to know exactly what for you need this card. Consider having several cards for different purchases: a gas card, a frequent flyer card , etc.
consider all the deals carefully. Make a separate chart and calculate everything.Always read the details.
You can also compare credit card offers by banks but I think this makes less sense than comparing credit cards by reward types.
If you have made up your mind to apply take a close look at the application form. Here comes the security issue. Identity theft is BIG. People feel very insecure applying for a credit card online because they don't want to show their personal information such as address or Social security number. Yes, it's dangerous. But remember that you are vulnerable every time you use your credit card! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Credit cards are a necessity and getting paranoid won't do much good for you.
So, to apply or not to apply online? I will say apply. When using a good site you are able to get all the information you need, compare the best deals and even ask a question by using the immediate credit card care service. And as for the security issue, as I have said, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

How Bad Is Your Bad Credit?

If you spend sometime at answers yahoo com in the 'Credit' section you will see that most of the questions asked are about bad credit. It seems like most people in this country have problems with their credit score.
What credit is bad credit?
The widely used scale is the FICO system. Here it is:
Excellent Credit - 750-850
Good Credit - 660-749
Fair Credit - 620-659
Poor Credit - 350-619
No credit - 0
So, what is bad credit? I would say that anything below 660 is bad. Of course, fair credit is slightly better than poor credit but it won't allow you to get best credit card deals and will make you pay higher rates and fees for your credit cards.
Why is your credit score so important? Even if are not planning to apply for a credit card there are good reasons to check your credit report regularly. First of all, whenever you decided to borrow money - get a mortgage loan, etc - the lender will consider your credit score. You landlord might be interested in it, too. Even your boss might check your credit report if you are considered for promotion because bad credit history portrays you as an irresponsible person.
Of course, no matter how bad your credit is, you can always get a bad credit credit card . But I will strongly advise to wait and rebuilt your credit history first.

When Choosing a Credit Card

I have just read an article at www.requestcredit.com on what you need to know before applying for a credit card. Well, I think this article needs some explanation.
So, read Credit Card Deal Can Be A Pretty Set Back with me.
Lets start with Credit Terms Required by Law. Truth in Lending basically forces banks to disclose certain credit card information such as
- Finance Charge: the "finance charge" is defined as the cost of credit over the life of the loan, expressed as a dollar amount
- Annual Percentage Rate (APR): the APR is the cost of credit expressed as a percentage.
- Amount Financed: the "amount financed" is also expressed as a dollar amount
- Schedule of Payments: the "schedule of payments" tells you the day of the month, timing, number and dollar amount of payments due over the entire course of the loan
- Total of Payments: the "total of payments" is also expressed as a dollar amount
This information gives the borrower an opportunity to calculate the amount of money they will have to pay back.
For more information on Truth in Lending read Consumer Law: Truth in Lending: What you Must Be Told When Getting a Consumer Loan or Other Consumer Credit
There is also the Consumer Leasing disclosures that can help you compare the cost and terms of one lease with another and with the cost and terms of buying for cash or on credit.
Using a credit card means you are using the so-called 'open-end' credit. So you can use it over and over again till you reach your credit limit. The scheme provided helps you to evaluate the cost of your credit card deal.
Pay attention to the charging methods. They can considerably affect the cost of the credit deal, even for the same pattern of purchases and payments. I would go for the adjusted balance method as the most convenient for the borrower.
Anyway, when choosing a credit card you must consider all the terms and make sure that they will allow you to pay your credit back.

The Great Beginning

I got my first credit card when I turned twenty-one. Since I don't drink alcohol that became the final act of my initiation into adulthood. I felt the responsibility. I actually felt it was a burden.
Time has passed (not that much, I'm still young!). Things have changed. And now I know that:

Credit cards are not a burden. They are a challenge!

I love credit cards. Every time I get a cash back reward or make a 0% balance transfer I feel smart. I feel like a person who is able to analyze many different options and make the right decision. I feel like I am more intelligent than people working in banks who make money on immature consumers.
I don't want to offend anyone. I know, there are many people in debt because of some circumstances. But frankly speaking, the main problem is poor financial management. Don't blame the 'evil' credit card companies that make you borrow more money than you can pay back. They don't force you, they offer. The choice is always yours.
I want this blog to be a place where people can find information they need to manage their credit cards wisely, share their experience and have fun!
